This spell lays a dweomer upon the caster such that the next spell cast by the caster, within the duration of the Delay, is temporarily suspended. For all intents and purposes the delayed spell has been successfully cast, yet the effects of the spell are not yet discharged. The caster can then choose to discharge the spell at any time within the duration of the Delay spell as a free action. If the caster does not choose to discharge the delayed spell before this time, the delayed spell is lost with no effect.

Delay delays a spell of level 4, 5 or 6. If the first spell cast after Delay is of level 7 or higher, the Delay spell is wasted. If the first spell cast after Delay is of level 3 or lower, Delay acts identically to Lesser Delay.

Once a spell is delayed, its power remains within the caster until discharged or the duration ends. This interferes with a spellcaster's ability to cast other spells. If another spell of level 4 or higher is cast while there is currently a spell being delayed, the delayed spell is lost. If another spell of level 3 or lower is cast, the caster must make a DC 20 Spellcraft check. A failed check means the delayed spell is lost, and a successful check means the delayed spell is maintained.

Spells that require touch attacks, damage rolls, saving throws and the like resolve these at the time when the spell is discharged.
