Animago

Animago

An animago is a type of animated construct, similar to a golem. However, where golems are generally large, strong and powerful, animagos are much more modest in abilities.

All animagos have the Construct type, thus giving them the following features:

Construct Type
A construct is an animated object or artificially constructed creature.

Features
A construct has the following features.

  • 10-sided Hit Dice.
  • Base attack bonus equal to ¾ total Hit Dice (as cleric).
  • No good saving throws.
  • Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die, if the construct has an Intelligence score. However, most constructs are mindless and gain no skill points or feats.

Traits
A construct possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

  • No Constitution score.
  • Low-light vision.
  • Darkvision out to 60 feet.
  • Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
  • Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromancy effects.
  • Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality.
  • Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain.
  • Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
  • Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less.
  • Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected.
  • Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the table.
Construct Size F D T S M L H G C
Bonus Hit Points 10 20 30 40 60 80
  • Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry.
  • Proficient with no armour.
  • Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe.

However, due to the varied construction of animagos, particularly those with less appreciable bulk than regular constructs, some animagos may have different hit dice, different base attack bonus, and may not receive bonus hit points for size.

An pannimago is an animago constructed from cloth. It may have the appearance of a regular set of clothes, or be a one-piece cloth "skin". Either way, the humanoid surface is completely covered in cloth, with no holes or gaps to give a clue as to what is inside. As such, to all outward appearances a pannimago may look exactly like a halfling or elf wearing normal clothes, gloves, socks (but not shoes or boots), and closed hood or balaclava. There is in fact nothing "fleshy" or even solid on the inside of the pannimago. The animating force of the pannimago is a spirit from the Elemental Plane of Air, which "inflates" the cloth to give the appearance of being worn.

All pannimago share the following characteristics.

  • 6-sided hit dice. A pannimago is not particularly sturdy, as in one sense it is mostly empty air.
  • Base attack bonus equal to ½ total Hit Dice (as wizard).
  • No bonus hit points for size.
  • Immune to bludgeoning weapons. Because cloth is quite supple, and there is no underlying solid to damage, bludgeoning weapons are effectively useless.
  • No slam attack. A pannimago attacks using a wielded melee weapon.

The type of cloth used in the construction determines certain additional features:

Cloth Type Additional Cost Bonus Features
Linen No additional features (default construction)
Hemp +20 gp +1 natural armour
Wool +20 gp Half damage from Fire Attacks
Silk +40 gp +2 Dex

The construction must be wholly created of the indicated cloth. If a pannimago is made from a mix of different cloth types, the simulacrum's "type" defaults to linen.

Quadruped Pannimago
A pannimago can be created in the form of a small four-legged creature (a cat, dog, or similar). These are identical to humanoid pannimago, except as follows:

Speed: 30 ft.
Attack: Claw +0 melee (1d4 slashing)
Full Attack: 2 Claws +0 melee (1d4 slashing)
  • No slam attack. A quadruped pannimago attacks using a claw attack.

The listed damage is for a pannimago of small size. For claw damage increases with the size of the pannimago: 1d6 for medium size, and 1d8 for large size.

A creature can use a quadruped pannimago as a mount, provided the simulacrum is one size category larger (for a creature wearing no or light armour), or at least two size categories larger (for a creature wearing medium or heavy armour).

Flying Pannimago
A pannimago can be created in the form of a small flying creature (an eagle, dragonette, or similar). These are identical to humanoid pannimago, except as follows:

Speed: 20ft., fly 40 ft. (average)
Attack: Claw +0 melee (1d3 slashing)
Full Attack: 2 Claws +0 melee (1d3 slashing)
  • No slam attack. A flying pannimago attacks using a claw attack.

The listed damage is for a pannimago of small size. For claw damage increases with the size of the simulacrum: 1d4 for medium size, and 1d6 for large size.

A creature can use a flying pannimago as a mount, provided the simulacrum is one size category larger (for a creature wearing no or light armour), or at least two size categories larger (for a creature wearing medium or heavy armour).

Creating A Pannimago
The person constructing the pannimago creates a "suit" of cloth which would completely cover a normal person. Indeed, a person constructing such a suit could use a normal (albeit fine-quality) pair of pants, shirt, gloves, socks and balaclava. These are carefully sewn together to form a humanoid shape, with no holes larger than a 1/16 inch. In addition, embroidery in the shape of mystic symbols must be applied to the the sleeves, legs and chest of the suit, using silver thread. Making a Small suit of sufficient quality requires a DC 14 Profession (Tailor) check, and costs 60 gp plus any additional cost based on cloth type. Suits of size Medium cost double that indicated, and suits of size Large cost quadruple.

A humanoid pannimago requires weapons, which must be supplied at normal cost by the caster. A quadruped or flying pannimago requires a set of small claws carved from ivory or silver, valued at 200 gp. The same sized claws can be used for Small, Medium or Large simulacrum suits.

A pannimago, once created, remains active for 10 minutes per caster level of the caster that created it. At the end of this time, the air spirit is released to return to its home plane. A caster may, however, re-animate the suit, at no further gp cost (the caster must, however, pay the XP cost again). Likewise, a caster may buy or sell unanimated suits as desired. Damaged suits can be repaired for ¼ creation cost and another DC 14 Profession (Tailor) check.

Small Humanoid Pannimago: CL 5th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster I, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 5th level; Price 120 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 60 gp minimum + 10 XP per HD.
Small Quadruped Pannimago: CL 6th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster II, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 6th level; Price 500 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 250 gp minimum + 10 XP per HD.
Small Flying Pannimago: CL 7th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster III, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 7th level; Price 500 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 250 gp minimum + 10 XP per HD.

Level Adjustment:

A lignimago is an animago constructed from wood. It may have the appearance of a carved wooden statue, a vaguely humanoid structure made of sticks, or anything in between. Either way, the lignimago is fully articulated at all joints, and moves with a level of fluid grace.

The animating force of the lignimago is a spirit from the Elemental Plane of Water, which practitioners of animation have determined are the spirits “least offended” by unexpected captivity in wooden objects.

All lignimago share the following characteristics.

  • 8-sided hit dice. Wood is stronger than cloth, but still not as sturdy as other materials.
  • Base attack bonus equal to ¾ total Hit Dice (as cleric).
  • One bonus hit point per HD.
  • Slam attack. A lignimago normally attacks using a wielded melee weapon, but may use a slam attack with each arm. This bludgeoning attack causes 1d4 for small lignimago, 1d6 for medium, and 1d8 for large.

The type of wood used in the construction determines certain additional features:

Wood Type Additional Cost Bonus Features
Pine No additional features (default construction)
Cedar +40 gp Slam attack is more damaging (as if one size category larger)
Oak +80 gp +2 Str
Mahogany +120 gp +1 hp per HD

The construction must be wholly created of the indicated wood. If a lignimago is made from a mix of different wood types, the simulacrum's "type" defaults to pine.

Quadruped Lignimago
A lignimago can be created in the form of a small four-legged creature (a cat, dog, or similar). These are identical to humanoid lignimago, except as follows:

Speed: 30 ft.
Attack: Claw +0 melee (1d6 slashing)
Full Attack: 2 Claws +0 melee (1d6 slashing)
  • No slam attack. A quadruped lignimago attacks using a claw attack.

The listed damage is for a lignimago of small size. For claw damage increases with the size of the lignimago: 1d8 for medium size, and 1d10 for large size.

A creature can use a quadruped lignimago as a mount, provided the simulacrum is one size category larger (for a creature wearing no or light armour), or at least two size categories larger (for a creature wearing medium or heavy armour).

Flying Lignimago
A lignimago can be created in the form of a small flying creature (an eagle, dragonette, or similar). These are identical to humanoid lignimago, except as follows:

Speed: 20ft., fly 40 ft. (average)
Attack: Claw +0 melee (1d4 slashing)
Full Attack: 2 Claws +0 melee (1d4 slashing)
  • No slam attack. A flying lignimago attacks using a claw attack.

The listed damage is for a lignimago of small size. For claw damage increases with the size of the lignimago: 1d6 for medium size, and 1d8 for large size.

A creature can use a flying lignimago as a mount, provided the simulacrum is one size category larger (for a creature wearing no or light armour), or at least two size categories larger (for a creature wearing medium or heavy armour).

Creating A Lignimago
The person constructing the lignimago creates a framework of wood in the shape of a humanoid, properly articulated at the major joints of a normal person (ankles, knees, hips, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers). The wood may be ornately carved, or relatively simple, as the creator desires. In addition, fine silver inlay in the shape of mystic symbols must be applied to the the arms, legs and chest of the lignimago. Making a basic Small frame of sufficient quality requires a DC 14 Profession (Carpenter) check, and costs 120 gp plus any additional cost based on wood type. Frames of size Medium cost double that indicated, and frames of size Large cost quadruple. Frames that involve ornate carving or designs require correspondingly higher Profession (Carpenter) checks and associated costs.

A crafter so choosing could make the limbs of a frame detachable. Such a frame can be packed into a space one size category smaller than when assembled - for example, a frame for a Small construct could fold into a Tiny object. This also has the benefit of allowing limbs to be swapped between frames, such as when a limb has been damaged or destroyed. To make a lignimago with detachable limbs requires a DC 17 Profession (Carpenter) check at creation, but no additional cost. To make spare limbs merely requires a DC 14 Profession (Carpenter) check, and materials to the value of ¼ the cost of a full frame.

A humanoid lignimago may use weapons, which must be supplied at normal cost by the caster. A quadruped or flying lignimago requires a set of small claws carved from ivory or silver, valued at 200 gp. The same sized claws can be used for Small, Medium or Large lignimago frames.

A lignimago, once created, remains active for 1 hour per caster level of the caster that created it. At the end of this time, the water spirit is released to return to its home plane. A caster may, however, re-animate the frame, at no further gp cost (the caster must, however, pay the XP cost again). Likewise, a caster may buy or sell unanimated frames as desired. Damaged frames can be repaired for ¼ creation cost and another Profession (Carpenter) check at the same DC required to create it.

Small Humanoid Lignimago: CL 7th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster II, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 7th level; Price 240 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 120 gp minimum + 20 XP per HD.
Small Quadruped Lignimago: CL 8th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster III, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 8th level; Price 880 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 440 gp minimum + 20 XP per HD.
Small Flying Lignimago: CL 9th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster III, Lesser Geas, Levitate, caster must be at least 9th level; Price 880 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 440 gp minimum + 20 XP per HD.

An aesimago is an animago constructed from metal. It may have the appearance of a carved metal statue, a vaguely humanoid structure made of metal beams, or anything in between. Either way, the aesimago is fully articulated at all joints.

The animating force of the aesimago is a spirit from the Elemental Plane of Earth, which has the greatest affinity for metals. This lengthens the time the spirit is bound, and keeps it relatively calm during its captivity.

All aesimago share the following characteristics.

  • 10-sided hit dice. Metal is an excellent material for building constructs.
  • Base attack bonus equal to total Hit Dice (as fighter).
  • Two bonus hit point per HD for size.
  • Slam attack. An aesimago normally attacks using a wielded melee weapon, but may use a slam attack with each arm. This bludgeoning attack causes 1d6 for small aesimago, 1d8 for medium, and 1d10 for large.
  • Half damage from electricity attacks. The solid metal body of an aesimago earths electrical attacks efficiently while suffering minimal damage.

The type of metal used in the construction determines certain additional features:

Metal Type Additional Cost Bonus Features
Copper No additional features (default construction)
Brass +100 gp Half damage from sonic attacks
Bronze +70 gp +2 Str
Iron +150 gp Slam attack is more damaging (as if one size category larger)
Lead +150 gp +4 bonus to Bull Rush, no AoO suffered

The construction must be wholly created of the indicated metal. If an aesimago is made from a mix of different metal types, the simulacrum's "type" defaults to copper.

Quadruped Aesimago
An aesimago can be created in the form of a small four-legged creature (a cat, dog, or similar). These are identical to humanoid aesimago, except as follows:

Speed: 30 ft.
Attack: Claw +0 melee (1d8)
Full Attack: 2 Claws +0 melee (1d8)
  • No slam attack. A quadruped aesimago attacks using a claw attack.

The listed damage is for an aesimago of small size. For claw damage increases with the size of the simulacrum: 1d10 for medium size, and 1d12 for large size.

A creature can use a quadruped aesimago as a mount, provided the simulacrum is one size category larger.

Creating An Aesimago
The person constructing the aesimago creates a framework of metal in the shape of a humanoid, properly articulated at the major joints of a normal person (ankles, knees, hips, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers). The metal may be ornately carved, or relatively simple, as the creator desires. In addition, fine silver inlay in the shape of mystic symbols must be applied to the the arms, legs and chest of the aesimago. Making a Small frame of sufficient quality requires a DC 14 Profession (Blacksmith) check, and costs 360 gp plus any additional cost based on metal type. Frames of size Medium cost double that indicated, and frames of size Large cost quadruple.

To make an aesimago with detachable limbs requires a DC 17 Profession (Blacksmith) check at creation, but no additional cost. To make spare limbs merely requires a DC 14 Profession (Blacksmith) check, and materials to the value of ¼ the cost of a full frame.

A humanoid aesimago may use weapons, which must be supplied at normal cost by the caster. A quadruped or flying aesimago requires a set of small claws carved from ivory or silver, valued at 200 gp. The same sized claws can be used for Small, Medium or Large aesimago frames.

An aesimago, once created, remains active for 6 hours per caster level of the caster that created it. At the end of this time, the earth spirit is released to return to its home plane. A caster may, however, re-animate the frame, at no further gp cost (the caster must, however, pay the XP cost again). Likewise, a caster may buy or sell unanimated frames as desired. Damaged frames can be repaired for 1/4 creation cost and another DC 14 Profession (Blacksmith) check.

Small Humanoid Aesimago: CL 9th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster III, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 9th level; Price 720 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 360 gp minimum + 30 XP per HD.
Small Quadruped Aesimago: CL 10th; Craft Construct, Summon Monster IV, Lesser Geas, caster must be at least 10th level; Price 1120 gp minimum (unanimated); Cost 560 gp minimum + 30 XP per HD.

Animago Combat

A standard humanoid animago has two arms and two legs, although it may gain more arms under special circumstances. As it normally attacks with weapons, one arm is nominally the "main-hand", and all other arms are "off-hands". It otherwise attacks as any other humanoid creature.

A quadruped animago has two forelegs and two backlegs, although it may gain more forelegs under special circumstances. It attacks using claw attacks, hence adheres to the rules for natural attacks, that being:

  • all forearm claw attacks are primary attacks (full attack bonus).
  • any other attacks (bite, rakes using backlegs, etc.) are secondary attacks (-5 penalty on the attack roll).
  • Multiattack feat reduces secondary attack penalty to -2.

A flying animago has two wings and two legs, although it may gain more legs under special circumstances. It attacks using claw attacks, hence adheres to the rules for natural attacks, that being:

  • all leg claw attacks are primary attacks (full attack bonus).
  • any other attacks (peck, wing buffet, etc.) are secondary attacks (-5 penalty on the attack roll).
  • Multiattack feat reduces secondary attack penalty to -2.
