Diary: Friday 1 September 1269

The recruiting has gone well. I have signed on seven members for my group, each with their own range of skills and abilities.

Sargen Cwna is a friend of mine from Maester Anders' School of Wizardry. He graduated with me last week (has it only been a week?). Although he had not really begun looking in earnest, he hasn't found any permanent work as yet, and was more than happy to have a temporary gig as an "adventurer".

Bryanna ferch Gwaren is a sorcerer originally from a farm near Hwlffordd. She felt that she was more likely to find a permanent job using her arcane skills in a city like Caerfyrddin. Unfortunately for her, she has had little luck in the six months she has been here. She is currently employed as a maid at the Silver Toadstool - an upmarket tavern in the same mould as the Bickering Bishops.

Joshua Talden is a cleric and Sephiroth a paladin, both based at Caerfyrddin's Cathedral of Jupiter. As part of their ongoing duties within the church, they are required to periodically "go out into the world" and serve the needs of those they find. And I figure, by serving my needs, they may indirectly help thousands. I know, I know - can I trust worshippers of a Roman god? Of course, my initial thought was to steer clear of them. However, the Church of Jupiter has been quite active amongst the poor in Caerfyrddin, and has done other civic works in nearby areas. The fact that their religion is the "invader" in Cymru probably means they will work all the harder to prove themselves.

Everyone so far seemed good at what they do, but as a group we were a little too "urban". My next member, the barbarian Kayen, was hired specifically for his expertise in more rugged terrain. He hails from the far north - somewhere in Pictland - and has made his way to Dyfed through mountains, forests, swamps, and quite a few hostile political situations.

Likewise, Sandor ap Meurig has spent his life as a wandering minstrel, travelling from town to town, and often finding himself in the wilderness for days on end. Those skills may make him as useful at keeping us alive as Kayen's. In addition, a bard's store of eclectic facts and easy-to-talk-to demeanour may be extremely useful in distant towns.

The final member of the group is the rogue Terjon ferch Llewelyn. A ranger or scout would have been more suitable for the task of enemy reconnaissance in hostile situations, but I could find no-one better within my tight timeline. Terjon assures me that she has had experience at that kind of task, yet is somewhat evasive when it comes to details. For now, I'm prepared to take her word for it.

We set sail tomorrow morning for Llanelli. The plan so far is to begin there, and scour the coast west as far as Burry Cliffs. We then return to Llanelli and work our way east around the Moryd Llwchwr until we reach the end of the Gower Peninsula. If we haven't found sign of the goblins by then, we will return to Caerfyrddin and come up with a new strategy.
